I’d Like Your Help To Build An Awesome Plugin

Back in May I had posted that I was working on a shortcode plugin for WP-Forge and that it was a few weeks out from being released. Here is the original post: WP-Forge Short Code Plugin

At the time I wrote that post, I was hugely optimistic about the idea of creating a plugin and releasing it within a few weeks. I found out that it was a lot harder to do than I had anticipated and rightly so. I am used to building themes, not plugins and they are, as I have come to understand, inherently different.

I know exactly how I want the plugin to work but I can’t seem to make it happen. I would like for this plugin to be made exclusively for WP-Forge, but I also want users who are utilizing a different theme to also be able to use it as well. I’d like to submit and have it hosted in the WordPress Plugin Directory.

I am an individual who likes to do things on their own. I hate asking people for help. I think this “lone wolf” mentality is a product of the fact that a few years ago someone did take something that I spent a great deal of time developing and called it their own. Ever since then I have chosen to do it on my own.

I think that the time for developing in the my dark little basement is over and I would honestly welcome the chance to collaborate with an individual or individuals on this plugin. I think this would be an awesome idea and it would enable the creation of something useful and helpful to a lot of people.

I have created a private repository on Github containing all of the files that the plugin has so far. The plugin so far is based off of Tom McFarlin’s WordPress Plugin Boilerplate. This is what I would like to use as the base of the plugin. I have researched a lot about the boiler plate and everything that I have read leads me to believe that this is the right tool for the project.

So, if you are interested in working with me to develop this shortcode plugin, tell me a little bit about yourself and any experience you may have with developing plugins, possibly some work you have done and so on. Please do not post your “resume” in the comments though. Send me an email with all the information you think I need and then post a comment with something along the lines of “Sent an email” or “i’m your huckleberry”.

When I find the right person or persons I will let everyone know and we will begin the process of creating what I hope to be the best Foundation shortcode plugin available.

    • Hi Violacase,

The only reason I am using Github is so everyone can keep track of what is going on. The reason it is private is because, people do not need access to something that isnt complete yet. I wold have access and if you helped you would have access. If you are concerned about not receiving credit, you should look at the docs in WP-Forge.

I give credit where credit is due and I list sources and tools that I use and used. So I am not trying to steal anything and besides if I did, that would be the most idiotic thing I could do. There are over 800 people on my mailing list that got notified of this post last night, plus it showed on Facebook, Twitter and Google+ – So even if the idea was to steal someones work or take the full credit, that would be the end of ThemeAwesome.com and WP-Forge.

So yeah, I wouldn’t let that happen.

      • I am not interested in credits of ownership. I belong (for 99%) to the club of http://www.wtfpl.net/
I think this project is a good one for public development. This way you get the right pull requests and early bug announces. All for free. Remember: visistor of GitHub are developers themselves.

You don’t have to worry about its beta-stage. The first line in readme.md can be just something in capitals like: ‘Don’t use this now. This project has just started’

        My two cents…

  1. Hmmm, Maybe your right, maybe your wrong, but I think it would be interesting to see what will happen and how the plugin will turn out, if everyone had access to it.

So i think i will give it a shot. Let me add a few more things to the project and then I will make the project open to everyone.

This is going to be fun 😉

  2. Hi Thomas,

I don’t have so much spare time but I’ll try to give a hand there.

BTW: Pull the es_ES.po is tainted and I’ll send you a new one in short. 😉

    • That’s great to hear Alfonso. I have been thinking about this “public” development of the plugin and the more I do, the more excited I get about it. I know there are a lot of people out there who can do some amazing things and I hope that once the plugin is finished, everyone will step back and agree its the best one out there.

I am just adding a few more things and then I will open the repo, so keep an eye out and thanks again 😉
