Over the past few days the site has been getting a lot of spam comments, spam topics and spam replies. I have been trying to combat the issue, utilizing many different techniques and plugins and nothing seemed to work.
I turned off the comments to one of the posts which seemed to be the target of the comment spam and this stopped that portion of the spam coming in.
The other part of the spam attack (if that’s what it was) was targeted at the forums. Initially I was allowing anonymous users to create topics and post replies, all of which were moderated before they appeared. I believe this is what allowed the spammers to create topics and replies and the reason why I was getting two or three emails every few minutes informing me that there was something that needed to be moderated. Needless to say it was very irritating.
So I decided to move the forums to a sub domain over here: ThemeAwesome.com Support Forums – If you want to create a topic or reply to a topic you will need to create an account. Once you have created your account you can post a topic. Of course the first topic you post after you join the site will be moderated. After that initial moderation, you will be able to create other topics without moderation.
There are also a couple of new features. You will notice a new editor, similar to the Tinymce editor. This will allow you to create better posts. Also, if the topic you are creating is a support type topic, you will notice a new check box that says “This is a support topic”. You can also add a signature to your account as well.
I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but since I’ve done this the spam has stopped all together which is a good thing 😉
