WP-Forge 5.4.6 Beta Testers Needed

I know it has been a while since I last updated WP-Forge, over 2 months ago as a matter of fact, and I do apologize. My father-in-law was in an automobile accident on his way to work, which lead to the loss of part of his left arm and other serious injuries. Sadly, he passed away on Sept. 30th. Needless to say, the past few months has been very hectic and depressing around the house, especially for my wife. During this time, I took on a major support role for her so she could drive the 45min trip everyday to see him and be there. This of course left me with very little time, if any on most days, to actually sit down and apply the changes I had planned.

Initially, I wanted to just release the update, but as I sat and thought about them, I came to the conclusion that it would be better to have her tested first and any bugs squashed before I issued a public release. There are a lot of changes in this update. Basically I rewrote the customizer section from the ground up as this is where the vast majority of changes occurred.

This is a screen shot of what the customizer looks like now:

I will be creating a thread in the support forums to go over the specifics of what was added in this beta version. I would also like to have any and all feedback or bugs posted to that particular forum. If you are not a member of the forums, you will need to join before you are able to post. Also please keep in mind that if you have not posted anything in the forums, your first topic or reply is moderated. After that initial moderation you will be able to post without moderation.

There is one update that didn’t make it into this version and that was the ability to use the Off-Canvas menu as a main menu. I tested it out, and it works beautifully, I just need to make sure that everything works the way its supposed. I also will have to take into account that this could add another section to the customizer for the changing of colors and so on. So I decided that I would make this the focus of the next update.

So if you would like to test 5.4.6 beta please leave a comment below and I will email you the zip file. you can download below. Keep in mind however, DO NOT INSTALL ON A LIVE SITE. Make sure you test on a demo server somewhere. So that’s it, if your ready, let’s have some fun 😉

*Beta testing is over

  1. Hi Thomas,

    I just got this and as always…I’m in front of my mac trying to change the world with your themes.

    Firstly, my best wishes and condolences to your wife mate. It must have been a stressful and emotional time for her as well as being the supportive person you need to be in this situation. Sorry to the hear this fella. I do hope you are both recovering well from such a loss.

    Like I said, I’m always here so send the beta puppy my way and will start grilling it for issues. This seems to be a major update to what Ive been using so in the best boat to shout…JCJ still in dev!!

    • Hi Hash,

      Thank you very much and we are doing fine, just starting to get back to some semblance of normalcy. And you are correct, this is a major update. Hope you like what i have done… coming your way 😎

  2. Thomas, thoughts and condolences to the family.

    Love what you’ve done with the theme, the full width wrappers are something I had added into my own base version of Forge 😉
    With Debug set to true, the customizer fires up a couple of errors on the file /inc/customizer/customizer.php – lines 40 & 41 – “$wp_customize->get_panel(‘widgets’)”
    commenting these out fixes the issues.

    • Thanks mark, greatly appreciated.

      I have the following in my config file:

      define('WP_DEBUG', true);
      define( 'WP_DEBUG_LOG', true );
      define( 'WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', true );

      And I am currently using WP 4.0

      I do not get any errors of any kind pertaining to the customizer. Calling the widget panel the way I did is the proper way to change them: http://natko.com/changing-default-wordpress-theme-customization-api-sections/ (this is also covered on other sites as well)

      even though the post I linked to deals with sections, it also pertains to panels and is basically the same.

      I also have the theme beta on a demo server, with the same config as I do on all my sites and I do not get any errors. Could there possibly something on your end that is triggering that error?

      • I thought of that too, disabled all plugins etc.
        Let me have another look at it by installing in a fresh local version of WP, just in case there’s something else causing it.

  3. Just installed the downloaded theme onto a clear WP4, with all plugins de-activated…

    Just the one theme installed: https://www.dropbox.com/s/9z3p8tvknkd6qfm/Screen%20Shot%202014-10-18%20at%2017.16.45.png?dl=0

    All Plugins de-activated: https://www.dropbox.com/s/eew7p8v86pzuv5b/Screen%20Shot%202014-10-18%20at%2017.17.14.png?dl=0

    And still shows the same error: https://www.dropbox.com/s/279qioeb5xiwhmu/Screen%20Shot%202014-10-18%20at%2017.17.29.png?dl=0

    Still not convinced it’s the theme at fault, as you say – you have done your fair share of testing.

    • I have no idea amigo. I have installed the theme on 4 different demo servers and still no errors. I see your using MAMP, maybe a php setting of some kind? (forget the MAMP statement, I was looking at something else for someone else…lol) I use WAMP locally for development.

  4. Hi Thomas,

    Just wanted to reach out and send my best for you and your family. As always thanks for your hard work!

    Go well friend.
