WP-Forge updated to and the WordPress Theme Directory

Since the last update a few days ago, I have been going through WP-Forge, cleaning up a few things in preparation for submission to the theme review team. In the process I came across a few things that I wanted to change.

Not only that but WordPress just released 4.1 and in that release the customizer was updated. After I updated to 4.1 (locally) I noticed that the default values were not being added to the header section on the front end of the theme. Before, all you had to do was make a little change, click save and publish and the all of the values were added to the header.

Since updating to 4.1, the only styles that get added to the header were the ones that were changed in the customizer. This perplexed me so I did a little more research and discovered what I was doing wrong. It seems there are two default values for the customizer. The first is the default value that is used by the customizer in the preview window. These values are pulled directly from the customizer.php file. So if you open up that file, you will see a default value for all of the settings. This is what the customizer uses.

The other default values are used for the custom css that is generated in the header on the front end. Unfortunately the code that was supposed to generate this CSS was written incorrectly. Luckily, I found a reference in the Codex that explained how to do this and so the customizer CSS generating code was re-written. Now all of the default values are added to the header once the theme is activated.

I also added a few things, like a new social menu and I changed a few styles for links and such. For a complete list of changes, please refer to the latest major commit for a list of changes.

And its official, I will be submitting WP-Forge to the theme review team after I finish writing this post. I don’t know exactly what I should be correcting, so I figure I will submit her and see what they send back. I will keep everyone updated on the entire process by posting updates to this post via comments. So if you would like to follow along, make sure you click “Notify me of new comments via email” and you’ll get notified when I post an update.

So there you have it, a new update with a few changes and the beginning of a process that is very scary to me but hopefully it wont be to bad. Wish me luck and as always, enjoy! πŸ˜‰

  1. Well its official. I uploaded WP-Forge to the theme review team. Upon initial scan I got the following message:

Results of Automated Theme Scanning: Pass

RECOMMENDED: No reference to add_theme_support( “title-tag” ) was found in the theme. It is recommended that the theme implement this functionality for WordPress 4.1 and above.

Note: While the automated theme scan is based on the Theme Review Guidelines, it is not a complete review. A successful result from the scan does not guarantee that the theme will pass review. All submitted themes are reviewed manually before approval.

Thank you for uploading WP-Forge to the WordPress Theme Directory. We’ve sent you an email verifying that we’ve received it. Feedback will be provided at https://themes.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/22242

So if you would like to follow along with this process, make sure you bookmark the URL they provided.

Wish me luck guys, I am nervious as hell….lol πŸ˜‰

    • Thanks, but I think I am suffering from the “is it good enough” syndrome. I know I can get her approved, its just that fear of rejection I guess. Keep your fingers crossed that there wont be too much to do.

  2. Well I went ahead and joined the theme review team. I figure if I am going to be creating themes, I can learn more about the entire process by actually reviewing other themes.

I think I made a goof though, I was playing around with a few things, one of them being Slacker and went into the them review area and posted mentioned my theme in there…lol

All in all it seems a pretty straight forward process. I have my first theme to review and so far it looks like its good to go. Just have to go over it a little more and follow the process.

This is actually quite fun πŸ˜‰

    • I’m going to do my best Francis. I just want to try and make the best themes I possibly can. I think anyone who develops themes should try and join the theme review team and learn the process.

The way I see it, the developer learns a lot about the standards and doing things right and more importantly, the end user gets a theme they know is rock solid from someone they can trust. Win win in my book πŸ˜‰

  3. I hope all goes well for you Thomas with your theme submission.

I must say that your theme WP-Forge is an absolute pleasure to develop with. You’re continuously updating the theme, keeping users informed via your website and developing it with quite a passion. I find Foundation fantastic; a winning combo with a useful theme.

    Bloody good work.

  4. Well so far WP-Forge is moving up the list of themes to be reviewed https://themes.trac.wordpress.org/query?priority=new+theme&status=new&priority=previously+reviewed&keywords=!~buddypress&col=id&col=summary&col=status&col=time&col=changetime&col=reporter&report=2&order=time – I didn’t know the process would be this long…lol Oh well in the interim I have been modifying WP-Forge with what I have learned so far (even though I have reviewed only one theme) and I think this new version is going to be great or at least I hope so. I’ll keep you updated as we progress.
